About HiDream
HiDream I1 is an open-weight text-to-image foundation model from HiDream.ai, released with 17 billion parameters and positioned as a state-of-the-art open model for high-quality generation in seconds. It is widely documented as a sparse mixture-of-experts transformer that pairs strong prompt adherence with unusually legible in-image text — the kind of typography earlier open models struggled with. The weights and reference implementation are public (github.com/HiDream-ai/HiDream-I1), and on Civitai the checkpoint is hosted so you can generate without downloading the roughly 17GB of weights or owning a GPU.
HiDream I1 ships in a few variants that trade speed for control. The Full variant runs the long 50-step sampling path and supports classifier-free guidance, which is what makes true negative prompts work; the distilled Dev and Fast variants run at CFG 1 for far quicker drafts, but negative prompts stop helping there and can actually hurt. The model reads natural-language descriptions rather than tag lists, responds strongly to explicit style cues, and handles complex multi-subject scenes and detailed backgrounds well. Around it, the community has built practical LoRAs — skin and face detailers, photorealism and color-correction packs, and stylistic sets like coloring-book, comic, and vector looks — that stack on top of the base checkpoint in the generator.
Choose HiDream when prompt fidelity and clean rendered text are the priority — layered scenes, posters, signage, and prompts where every described element needs to land. It sits alongside Flux and Qwen as a natural-language, adherence-first model; Flux carries a much larger LoRA library and a photorealism reputation, and lighter SDXL-based checkpoints remain faster and deeper for anime and character styles. HiDream is the pick when you would rather the model follow a detailed description exactly than reach for a specialized style ecosystem, and its 17B size means each image costs more Buzz than a lighter checkpoint.
How to prompt HiDream
- Write in natural language — full descriptive sentences, not comma-separated tags. Detailed descriptions yield sharper results than tag lists. A useful template is: subject and action, then setting and environment, then style descriptors, then lighting and mood.
- Do not use weight syntax or brackets. Constructs like (word:1.4) and ((word)) are not supported and cause issues — describe emphasis in words instead.
- Negative prompts only work in the Full (50-step) variant via CFG. In the distilled Dev and Fast variants CFG is 1, so negatives are detrimental — leave them empty there.
- For text in an image, put the exact words in double quotation marks (e.g. a sign reading "OPEN"). HiDream renders quoted text far more reliably than unquoted.
- Lean on style cues — HiDream responds strongly to them. Append "in the style of ..." for zero-shot styles, and stack styles when you want a blend, but note the later style token tends to dominate.
