About the Artist

• Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) — French Post-Impressionist, chronicler of Parisian night life and the cabarets of Montmartre.

• House artist of the Moulin Rouge; his 1891 poster Moulin Rouge: La Goulue invented the modern lithographic poster.

• Subjects: can-can dancers (La Goulue, Jane Avril), singers (Aristide Bruant, Yvette Guilbert), the clowness Cha-U-Kao, circus acrobats, and the tender backstage intimacy of brothel life.
