M4A4 (Sherman V)

The M4A4 Sherman, designated as the Sherman V by the British, was a prominent variant of the famous American M4 medium tank series produced during World War II.

While it shared the general welded-hull layout and basic combat role of other Sherman models, the M4A4 is most famous for its unique power plant: the Chrysler A57 multibank engine. Because standard radial aircraft engines were critically prioritized for the U.S. Army Air Forces, Chrysler ingeniously combined five 6-cylinder automobile engines around a central crankshaft, creating a massive 30-cylinder, 370-to-470 horsepower engine.

To accommodate this giant engine, the M4A4 required a longer hull (extended by about 11 inches) and more widely spaced bogie suspension assemblies. Although the U.S. Army generally preferred other variants like the Ford V8-powered M4A3 and didn't use the M4A4 extensively in combat themselves, they supplied large numbers to the British Army and Commonwealth forces, where it became a vital workhorse toward the end of the war.

M4A4シャーマン（イギリス軍呼称：シャーマンV）は、第二次世界大戦中に生産された有名なアメリカ製M4中戦車シリーズの主要な派生型の一つです。

溶接構造の車体レイアウトや基本的な戦闘任務といった点は他のシャーマン各型と共通していましたが、M4A4は、そのユニークな動力源であるクライスラー製のバス用A57マルチバンク・エンジンによって特に知られています。

この巨大なエンジンを搭載するため、M4A4は車体を延長（約11インチ＝約28cm延長）し、ボギー式サスペンションの間隔を広げる必要がありました。ガソリンエンジンではあるもののなぜかアメリカ陸軍ではあまり使用されず、その殆どはイギリス軍や英連邦軍には大量に供給しました。その結果、M4A4はそれらの軍において、大戦末期に向けた重要な主力戦車として活躍することとなりました。対ドイツ戦車のエース的存在であった「ファイアフライ」の多くは、このM4A4を改造したものです。
