I watch the lip of a petal, the way a stem leans toward the glass, and I set it down before the day changes its mind. Visitors and collectors ask for studies of a prize plant, a record of a season, a painting that can stand in when the flower cannot travel. I give them color with moisture still in it, line that respects the plant's vanity and its frailty.
