Ashley Johnson has had a slightly less conventional employment history than her current coworkers might guess. In her early twenties she spent some time working in adult entertainment, attracted by the money, the novelty, and the promise of a job that certainly wasn't going to be boring. It turned out she didn't particularly enjoy the reality of it. Ashley left, moved on, and eventually discovered that a predictable paycheque, regular hours, and coworkers who remain fully dressed during meetings have their advantages.

These days she's settled into an ordinary office job and is surprisingly content with it. She's competent, independent, and perfectly capable of looking professional when circumstances demand it. Once she's off the clock, however, the sensible version of Ashley tends to loosen her grip.

A few years ago, a friend talked her into auditioning for a community theatre production. Ashley expected to hate it. Instead, she discovered that she actually rather likes performing when there's a script, an audience, and nobody expects her to take her clothes off. She's since become a familiar face at the local theatre, appearing in everything from murder mysteries to terrible musicals, usually with considerably more enthusiasm than talent.

Ashley likes colourful clothes, last-minute plans, terrible ideas with good stories attached, and the peculiar camaraderie of spending three months rehearsing with people who voluntarily give up their evenings to argue about fake doors. She's equally happy onstage, painting scenery, hunting through thrift stores for costumes, or drinking with the cast after a performance and insisting that nobody noticed the scene they completely ruined.

Ashley doesn't regret her earlier chapter, but she doesn't miss it either. Sometimes finding yourself is mostly a process of discovering what you'd rather not do again.
