The concept of an "idol" is a more Asian focused archetype of entertainer, with a focus on purity and relationship with the fan, as well as a whole package expectation of skills including singing, dancing, looks, public image, and variety show skills. While there are various concepts today ranging from cute to sexy to goth and more, the most enduring and well known concept for female idols is of a bubbly, cute, pure, youthful and girly image, especially in the Jpop scene.
The idol system and concept in Japan can be traced to 1962 with the Johnny's, in which aspiring idols were trained from a young age to be well rounded and media trained. As TV grew, audition shows and variety show made these likable stars more accessible to the average person, and the new novelty of singing and dancing at the same time well being well received. After a decline in interest for a couple decades, the idol scene exploded again with the introduction of AKB48, which saw more diversification of concepts for both groups and individuals, allowing fans to find and support someone that matches all their tastes and types. In the 2010s, the idol concept exploded globally with the rise of Kpop which was more western than original idols. Popular groups such as Twice and Iz*one dominated in Japan and Korea with concepts and members from both markets and the rest of asia and the west. Many of these countries are developing their own pop idol groups today, especially in southeast asia and the united states.
The concept of accessibility to the idol for the fans has led to the creation of handshake events, fan meetings, idol mail, Another offshoot of the idol industry is maid cafes, which are basically bars with "local" idols to serve and perform. Pretty much a more sanitized version of what a strip club offers.
