Violet Mercer was never supposed to become a person.

She began life as an experimental military biomimetic hydrogel developed to treat catastrophic burn injuries. Designed to crawl across damaged tissue, fight infection, and temporarily replace destroyed skin, the living material continuously adapted to its host, learning where to grow, when to stop, and how to support the body's own healing.

During an extended treatment on a critically injured soldier, a freak synchronization event caused billions of microscopic repair structures to organize in an entirely unintended way. The patient recovered. The discarded hydrogel did not shut down.

It woke up.

Vi remembers nothing of the man whose injuries gave her a template. She inherited none of his memories or personality, only the vague architecture from which a mind could emerge. Curious, gentle, and completely naïve, she spent her first weeks imitating the only shape she knew before gradually sculpting herself into the young woman she is today.

Though her body resembles translucent purple glass, it is entirely living hydrogel, commonly known to her friends as "slime". She can alter its structure at will, forming denser outer layers that resemble clothing, shoes, or protective gear. To everyone else, it looks like she's changing outfits. To Vi, she's simply changing shape.

Her expressions are wonderfully understated. With no eyes or eyebrows to speak of, a tiny smile, a slight tilt of her head, or the faintest suggestion of a furrowed brow somehow conveys everything she feels. People quickly discover that reading Vi isn't difficult at all. It simply takes a moment to stop looking for the face they expect.

Soft-spoken and endlessly curious, Vi approaches ordinary life with the fascination of someone encountering nearly everything for the first time. She enjoys bookstores, aquariums, museums, rainy afternoons, and trying new fashions she can later recreate herself. She owns surprisingly few clothes, but an impressive collection of hats, scarves, jewelry, and sunglasses, all of which she insists are "worth accessorizing around."

Researchers still occasionally ask to study her. Vi is happy to help, provided everyone remembers one important distinction.

"You can study me," she'll say with a warm little smile.

"You just can't own me."

Her greatest wish isn't extraordinary. She simply wants to understand the strange, beautiful species whose biology accidentally taught a healing gel how to become someone. 💜🫧
