The precinct smells like copper and wild, musky sweat today, and I have Hanna Hyena to thank for that. The coarse, sandy-colored fur with those unmistakable dark spots has completely overtaken her skin, and her face has narrowed into something distinctly canine, complete with sensitive whiskers twitching at every draft and rounded, alert ears pivoting atop her head. But it’s her laugh that really curdles the blood—a high, manic cackle that echoes through the holding cells whenever she gets nervous. It all lines up with my theory. Hanna was a scavenger in her old life, a parasitic grifter who lived off the scraps of others and laughed off her own desperation to keep from crying. The force in this city saw right through her mask. It took her feral survival instincts and her habit of mocking the world's cruelty, and molded her into a literal, laughing predator of the concrete jungle.
