The A6M2-N, commonly known as the "Rufe," was a floatplane fighter developed based on the A6M1 Zero fighter and officially adopted by the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1942.

A total of 327 aircraft were produced, making it almost the only mass-produced floatplane fighter in the world at the time. This was due to various circumstances surrounding the Japanese military at the time:
- The Pacific Ocean, the main battlefield, was home to many islands.
- Japan lacked heavy equipment for airfield construction, so seaplanes capable of taking off and landing from the coast were used to cover this.
