The Woody Woodpecker Polka is the 37th animated short in the Woody Woodpecker series, released theatrically on October 29, 1951. In typical fashion, it follows Woody’s misadventures as he schemes to get food, much to the misfortune of his perpetual foil, Wally Walrus.
While it enjoyed modest success at the time, the short has taken on a second life in the Internet era (Apparently more in Latin America than other countries), where it has gained a cult reputation. The reason? Woody’s disguise. Specifically, the scene where he adopts an unexpectedly glamorous female persona to fool Wally.
People often cite this animated shot as proof that Woody can rival Bugs Bunny in the art of the cross-dressing gag. But let’s be honest, Bugs in drag always looks like… well, Bugs in drag. Woody’s disguise in this cartoon, though? It’s startlingly convincing. So convincing, in fact, that it feels like the animators went above and beyond, borderline overboard, for what was supposed to be a children’s cartoon.
Am I complaining? Not at all. That’s exactly why this short has become legendary, and why this model exists.
Have fun! (In any and every way you want... 😏)
