Posterization is a visual effect in which the number of colors in an image is intentionally reduced by lowering its color depth. As a result, smooth gradients and transitions are replaced with sharp, distinctly separated color regions. This effect creates a stylized look reminiscent of posters, comic books, or images printed with a limited color palette.
