A hauntingly beautiful yet profoundly disturbing scene inside a ruined medieval chapel, where an elaborate Halloween midnight mass is being conducted for an audience of the dead. Hundreds of motionless figures dressed in decaying black funeral garments sit in long rows of ancient wooden pews, their heads concealed beneath dirty white burial shrouds, all facing a monumental altar carved from dark weathered stone. At the center of the altar stands a tall feminine figure wearing an elaborate ceremonial gown of black lace and faded ivory silk, her face completely hidden beneath a rigid porcelain mask with a sorrowful expression. An enormous crown of intertwined dried branches rises from her head, carrying dozens of tiny extinguished candles and withered flowers. Behind her, the chapel's great circular window reveals not the outside world but an immense pale human eye staring inward through the broken stained glass, its vast iris faintly illuminated by cold moonlight. Hundreds of fallen autumn leaves cover the floor, mingling with scattered prayer books, broken rosaries, and pools of black rainwater leaking through the collapsed roof.
