A desolate nightmare illustration of a narrow country lane at midnight on All Hallows Eve, seen from a low angle at the height of a child's knees, both sides lined by a crooked fence whose posts are topped with hollowed carved turnips glowing with weak candle light, each face cut into a different twisted grimace, their flames casting shaky amber light across the mud. A small child in a patched wool coat walks along the center of the lane carrying one more turnip lantern in both hands, seen from behind, the flame trembling. Thick fog swallows the far end of the lane, and every turnip face along the fence is turned slightly toward the child. Far behind, at the start of the lane, a tall thin cloaked figure stands in the fog, holding its own lantern high at the end of a very long arm, neither coming closer nor going away. Palette of mud brown, fog grey, dull amber and soot black. Gritty charcoal and dry pastel texture, soft glow, fine grain.
