A film photograph taken from the bottom of a wooden staircase at a crowded Halloween house party, using a slow shutter with a flash, so the costumed guests rushing up and down the stairs around her dissolve into streaks of colour and light. In the middle of the stairs, a woman in her twenties stands perfectly still and sharp, frozen by the flash, wearing a black vampire cape with a high red-lined collar over a black velvet dress, her dark hair slicked back, plastic fangs and a dark red smile aimed straight at the camera. Strings of orange lights wrap the bannister, a fog machine sends low haze down the steps, and red party light from the hallway above washes the walls. Shot on Kodak Portra 800 with direct on-camera flash and a half-second exposure, motion trails, hard flash shadows, visible grain and natural skin texture. Wild, electric and a little haunting.
