A wide cinematic film still, shot on a 32mm anamorphic lens at T2 on tungsten-balanced 500T negative, printed cold with deep blacks and silver highlights. The subject is a Circassian woman of twenty-seven, strikingly beautiful, with a long oval face, very fair skin, high fine cheekbones, large pale grey eyes set wide under dark arched brows, a narrow straight nose, a small full mouth and very long dark-auburn hair blowing loose across one shoulder. She wears a heavy black wool coat open over a long ivory nightdress, bare feet on the wet stone. She stands small and slightly right of centre on a ledge of black rock at the edge of the sea at night, one hand holding her coat closed at her throat, her face turned up toward the lighthouse above her. The lighthouse rises on the headland at the left of frame, white and tall, its lantern room glowing at the top. A low stone keeper's cottage sits at its foot with one lit window. Below her the sea moves in long slow swells that break white against the rocks, and fog rolls in off the water in thick drifting banks. The lighting is built around one moving source. The key is the lighthouse beam itself, a long solid blade of white light sweeping out over her head through the fog, caught at the moment it passes directly above her, so it rakes down across her face, her hair and her shoulders in a hard cold flash and throws her shadow long across the wet rock. The second source is the cottage window, small and warm, which lays a faint amber glow on the stones near the base of the tower and catches the edge of her coat. The third is a three-quarter moon behind the fog, which turns the whole bank into a softly glowing grey ceiling and fills the sea and the shadow side of her face with dim cool light so her features stay readable. The ratio is enormous, the beam several stops brighter than anything else in the frame, and the sea between the swells prints almost black. The fog makes the beam a fully volumetric shaft with a sharp leading edge and a soft trailing glow, and the lantern room blooms into a blinding white star at the top of the tower. Spray hangs in the beam as glittering points, the anamorphic glass throws a long horizontal blue flare across the frame from the lantern, the moon halates as a large soft disc in the fog, the beam's edges fringe cyan, the cottage window becomes a small warm oval, the corners vignette hard, grain crawls through the black water, and the frame weaves gently. The wide anamorphic view stretches the headland and the sweep of the beam across the full width of the frame. The grade runs steel blue and silver white against one small amber window, blacks deep, highlights blooming. The mood is lonely, romantic and immense: one beautiful woman at the edge of a dark sea, caught for a single second in the passing light. Cinematic effects: sweeping volumetric lighthouse beam, god rays through fog, anamorphic horizontal blue lens flare, oval bokeh, bloom and halation around the lantern and moon, chromatic aberration on the beam edges, heavy film grain, gate weave, light leak at the frame edge, deep vignette, letterboxed widescreen framing.
