A 38-year-old red-bearded highwayman in a long weathered brown coat and a wide-brimmed hat, a stoneware whiskey jug on his belt, stands grinning on a misty mountain pass road. He holds up a leather bag of gold coins in his right hand, a lowered rapier in his left. Behind him is a stopped black coach, its wheel as tall as his chest; from its dark window a gloved hand is raised in surrender. Lord of the Rings book illustration, pencil and watercolour, soft graphite lines, muted moss green, slate grey, heather and ochre washes, realistic proportions, highly detailed, epic.
