An intimate candlelit portrait on fast film at f1.2, with the shallow plane of focus landing on her eyes and letting the edge of her glass and her shoulder fall into a wash. A slender young woman of twenty-six is leaning in across a booth, chin dropped toward her chest so her blue eyes travel up beneath heavy upper lids, pupils widened to the point where the iris reads as a thin ring around a black disc. The expression is deliberate and slow: a smile at one corner of her mouth, that side lifted and the other left flat, and a faint crease at the outer corner of the lifting eye. Nearly black hair is worn long and loose, one section pushed behind the ear and the other falling forward across her jaw, its tips grazing the glass. She wears a black silk camisole under a cream chore coat slid off one shoulder, a thin gold chain resting in the hollow of her throat, and holds a stemmed glass of red wine by the base, a red-stained mouth printed faintly on the rim. Around her: a dark wood banquette, a small table with a bread plate and crumb, a taper's wax pool, and the blurred amber of other tables. Contrast is high and shadows are truly black with no fill; the color is candle-gold on skin against ink. The mood is intent, amused, in total command of the moment.
