A set of narrow-gauge railway tracks with wooden sleepers and rails runs down the center of the coal dust and rubble-covered floor. Near the center, a points junction splits the track. Overhead, a single old-style lantern provides dim, warm, localized light, and other lights further down cast pools of cool blue light in the far deep mine shaft. Bundles of electrical wires and pipes are strung along the timber walls. The atmosphere is industrial, deep, silent, and operational. The tracks and timber structure provide strong depth.
